Assessment Assignment

You are required to prepare the following promotional package of visual materials and documentation to mediate a work or body of work you have exhibited or presented for assessment.

The aim of the package is to enable an interested third party to understand your work and your interests as an art practitioner, without seeing the actual body of work itself.

For 2d and 3d works

For 4d works

Submit a CD, which can be read either on PC or Mac, containing the following items:

  1. A folder, named "documents", which contains four Word documents:
    • An artist’s statement of 250 words on the subject of the work or body of work you select as the subject matter for the assignment.
    • A summary of that statement, in bullet point form, of 50 words
    • An up-to-date artist's curriculum vitae
    • An image list, which lists the images submitted in 2 below and gives the title, dimensions, medium and date of the work in each image. Please also note here if an image is of a detail of the work.

  2. A folder, named "high_res_images", which contains four (4) images in JPEG format of the work or body of work you select as the subject matter for the assignment, in JPG format, of size 2048 x 1536 pixels. One of these images should be of the work or body of work installed for exhibition or assessment*.

  3. A folder, named "low_res_images", which contains lower-resolution versions in JPEG format of the four images in the "high_res_images" folder, of size 600 x 450 pixels.

  • a two-minute extract of the 4D work or body of work you select as the subject matter for the assignment, re-sized to 320 x 240 pixels resolution in MPEG4 format.

Guidelines

You must be selective about what you submit - it is better to submit a small amount of high-quality material rather than a large amount of lesser quality, irrelevant material. Submit only what is relevant and necessary.

You cannot assume that all of the assessors will know your work. Your submission may be assessed by people who do not know your work.

All supporting documentation must be correctly labelled and submitted in the prescribed formats.

Prescribed formats and requirements

CV

You must include a current artist CV. Your CV should include a comprehensive overview of your work as relevant (e.g., exhibitions, performances, recordings, etc.), reflecting the work that you have done and your expertise in this area. The CV should be in MS Word format.

The material we covered in our classes on CVs will be helpful to you here.

Artist statement

You are required to provide two statements about your body of work

  • A 250-word statement.
  • A 50-word summary.

Both statements should be in MS Word format. The statements should contain your name and contact details, as well as the name of the work to which it refers.

The material we covered in our class on artist statements will be helpful to you here.

Image list

The image list must contain the filenames of the images you are submitting, along with details of the title and date of the work, media and dimensions (of the work, not of the image). The numbering of the image list must correspond to the required viewing order of your images.

The image list should be in MS Word format. The image list should contain your name and contact details.

Image files

If you are making a submission in relation to 2D or 3D work:

You are required to submit four(4) image files to represent your body of work, and each image must be submitted in two sizes - a high-resolution version of size 2048 x 1536 pixels, and a low-resolution version of size 600 x 450 pixels. One of the images should be of the work installed for exhibition or assessment*.

Select images that represent your work clearly. All high-resolution images should be of printable quality without the need for further editing. All low-resolution images should be optimised for screen delivery.

All images should be in JPEG format. The four high-resolution images should be stored in a folder called "high_res_images" and the four low-resolution images should be stored in a folder called "low_res_images".

If you are making a submission in relation to 4D work:

You are required to submit one (1) image file to represent your work installed for exhibition or assessment*. The image must be submitted in two sizes - a high-resolution version of size 2048 x 1536 pixels, and a low-resolution version of size 600 x 450 pixels.

*If you select a work or body of work as the subject matter for this assignment for which you do not have images of the work installed for exhibition or assessment, it will be necessary to re-install the work in the studio or another suitable location and photograph it again.

Video files

If you are making a submission in relation to 4D work, you must provide a two-minute extract from your work in two formats:

  • a version that has been re-sized to 320 x 240 pixels resolution in MPEG4 format.

Assessment criteria

The submission that you make will be assessed BOTH on its technical competence AND on its conceptual, critical content. In addition to using the technical skills you have learned at the PSS workshops, you must also demonstrate, in the selection of images and the composition of your supporting documentation, a well-developed critical and conceptual understanding of your own work, and an ability to communicate this to your target audience.

The two strands - technical competence and conceptual, critical content - will be assessed separately, and the results combined to yield the final grade.

You will make a technical draft submission on Friday 11th January 2008. This should be as complete as possible. The technical draft submission will be returned to you, with feedback on the technical content only, on Friday 1st February 2008. Your finalised submission is due on Friday 15th February 2008.
